What should I do if my child has a dental emergency after hours?
If an emergency occurs after our normal flying hours, please call our main office line and follow the instructions on our voicemail. We provide guidance for after-hours care to ensure your child isn’t left grounded during a crisis. If your child has suffered a traumatic injury involving severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or a suspected broken jaw, please head to the nearest emergency room immediately.
It depends on the severity of the symptoms and how they are impacting your child. While most cavities are handled during a standard restorative visit, if a cavity has reached the point of causing sharp pain, sensitivity to cold, or discomfort while eating, it is considered a dental emergency. In these cases, we prioritize a same-day clinical assessment to investigate the underlying cause of the pain and evaluate the extent of the decay. Once we have a clear diagnosis, we can determine the best “flight plan” for immediate relief and discuss whether the tooth requires stabilization today or a more permanent restoration in the near future.

Emergencies are stressful, and it’s completely normal for a child to feel anxious. We specialize in “calm-down” techniques and use age-appropriate language to help them feel like a brave pilot. Our goal is to stabilize the tooth as gently as possible, often using minimally invasive methods to keep the experience positive and stress-free.

It depends on the severity of the symptoms. If the chip is small and your child isn’t in pain, it can often wait for a regular appointment. However, if the chip is large, has sharp edges, or if you can see a red or dark spot inside the tooth, it can warrant a same-day assessment to help protect the nerves and prevent an infection from starting.
