Adaptive Pediatric

When Your Child Needs Same-Day Emergency Treatment

Think of this approach as the “gentle glide” of modern dentistry. It is the ideal choice for children who are nervous about traditional tools or simply cannot tolerate the sound and feel of a drill. Instead of removing natural tooth structure, we use advanced, high-precision medicinal applications to heal, seal, and protect your child’s smile. This refined method prioritizes both their natural teeth and their comfort, ensuring the visit is quiet, effective, and entirely “ouch-free.

When Your Child Needs

Same-Day Emergency Treatment

While some dental issues can wait for a scheduled arrival, others require an immediate change in course. If your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms or conditions, please call our office right away at (516) 894-0718 to request a same-day appointment. Dental emergencies are time-sensitive, and prompt care is the best way to ensure a smooth recovery and get your child’s dental health back on a steady flight path.

Uncontrollable Pain or Obvious Discomfort

Whether it’s a standard cavity or a deeper issue, a toothache isn’t always obvious until it starts causing significant pain. If your child is experiencing a persistent toothache that prevents them from sleeping or eating, they need an urgent assessment. We focus on immediate pain relief and stabilization to stop the discomfort and prevent minor “turbulence” from escalating into a more complex problem. By addressing the pain on the same day, we can often save a compromised tooth and ensure a smoother recovery.

Obvious Signs of Infection or Abscess

If you notice swelling in the gums, a visible bump (abscess), or facial swelling accompanied by pain, this indicates an urgent need for specialized emergency services. These signs often point to a significant infection that requires immediate intervention. Our office is equipped to treat these conditions quickly, managing the infection to protect both the baby tooth and the developing permanent tooth underneath.

Laughing Gas

Nitrous Oxide for Kids

For children who feel a little turbulence before their treatment, we offer Nitrous Oxide—often called “Laughing Gas.” This safe, mild sedative helps your child feel calm and “giggly” within just three to five minutes of takeoff. Administered through a comfortable nosepiece, your child stays fully awake and responsive while Dr. Pae carefully monitors and adjusts the dosage to ensure a perfectly relaxed journey.

Once the procedure is complete, we provide a few minutes of pure oxygen to quickly flush out the nitrous oxide and bring your child back to a smooth landing. Because the effects wear off almost immediately, your little pilot won’t feel woozy or “spaced out” after their appointment. They’ll be ready to go about their day with a bright, happy smile. Help your child enjoy a stress-free flight; ask us about using laughing gas during their next visit!

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

For children facing severe dental anxiety or undergoing longer procedures, we offer IV Sedation—the deepest level of comfort available in a dental setting. Think of this as the “Overnight Flight”; it allows your child to rest in a deep state of relaxation while our expert crew performs their care. To ensure the highest safety standards, a dedicated dental anesthesiologist joins our fleet to monitor your child’s heart rate and blood pressure from takeoff to landing, while Dr. Pae focuses entirely on their healthy smile.

During this quiet journey, the medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream for immediate, controlled relaxation. Your child may fall into a gentle sleep and, most importantly, will have no memory of the procedure once they wake up. This is our most advanced option for ensuring that even the most challenging dental milestones feel like a blink of an eye, leaving your child refreshed and ready for their next adventure.

Sensory-Friendly & Special Needs Dental Care

Every child’s journey to a healthy smile follows a different flight path, and we are here to ensure yours is a smooth one. Our approach to inclusive care begins with Adaptive Dentistry, where we carefully adjust our environment to suit your child’s unique comfort level. From softening the noise of our equipment to dimming the lights or offering weighted blankets, we treat every visit like a custom-folded experience. We believe that by modifying our workspace to meet your child’s sensory needs, we can clear the clouds of anxiety and create a predictable, peaceful atmosphere.

We understand that the secret to a successful landing is all about pacing and communication. Our team is trained to adapt our “pre-flight” explanations and treatment speed to match your child’s specific physical, developmental, or behavioral requirements. By taking the time to listen to your family’s story and learning what helps your child feel most secure, we ensure that dental care is never a source of stress. Whether your child needs a “practice run” visit or a slower-paced appointment, we are committed to helping every family in our community take flight with confidence.

Traumatic Injury to a Tooth

(Fractured, Dislodged, or Knocked Out)

Accidents, sports injuries, or falls require immediate expert guidance to check for root damage or displacement.

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

This is a critical emergency; every minute counts. Contact us immediately, as the window for successfully saving the tooth is narrow. When an adult tooth is knocked out, the delicate periodontal ligaments attached to the root begin to die.

Knocked-Out Baby Tooth

If a baby tooth is knocked out prematurely, an immediate assessment is still necessary to check for gum injury and ensure the developing adult tooth beneath remains protected. A quick clinical check ensures the area is healing correctly and allows us to determine if a space maintainer is needed to keep your child’s future smile on its proper path.

Fractured (Broken) Tooth

The urgency of a broken tooth depends on the severity of the break, but the only way to truly tell the extent of the damage is through a clinical and radiographic assessment. If the fracture is deep, the internal "pulp"—the nerve and blood supply of the tooth—can become vulnerable to bacteria from the mouth. Our primary goal is to perform an immediate evaluation to determine if we can preserve and maintain the pulp, saving the tooth whenever possible. Acting quickly allows us to seal the structure and protect the nerve before an infection or abscess can develop, ensuring your child’s natural smile stays on a steady flight path.

Immediate Pain Relief and Stabilization

When a dental emergency strikes, the primary goal is to stop the discomfort and stabilize the situation. Seeking care on the same day prevents minor issues from escalating into more complex problems. By addressing the issues early as they pop up, we can often save a damaged tooth and prevent the spread of infection, ensuring a much smoother recovery for your little flyer.

Accidents happen, especially during active play. If your child experiences a dental injury, our team provides an immediate clinical assessment to check for root damage or displacement. We guide you through the necessary next steps (whether that involves a protective restoration, a baby tooth root canal (pulpotomy), or a referral to a specialist) to ensure your child’s long-term dental development stays protected.

What should I do if my child has a dental emergency after hours?
If an emergency occurs after our normal flying hours, please call our main office line and follow the instructions on our voicemail. We provide guidance for after-hours care to ensure your child isn’t left grounded during a crisis. If your child has suffered a traumatic injury involving severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or a suspected broken jaw, please head to the nearest emergency room immediately.
It depends on the severity of the symptoms and how they are impacting your child. While most cavities are handled during a standard restorative visit, if a cavity has reached the point of causing sharp pain, sensitivity to cold, or discomfort while eating, it is considered a dental emergency. In these cases, we prioritize a same-day clinical assessment to investigate the underlying cause of the pain and evaluate the extent of the decay. Once we have a clear diagnosis, we can determine the best “flight plan” for immediate relief and discuss whether the tooth requires stabilization today or a more permanent restoration in the near future.

Emergencies are stressful, and it’s completely normal for a child to feel anxious. We specialize in “calm-down” techniques and use age-appropriate language to help them feel like a brave pilot. Our goal is to stabilize the tooth as gently as possible, often using minimally invasive methods to keep the experience positive and stress-free.

It depends on the severity of the symptoms. If the chip is small and your child isn’t in pain, it can often wait for a regular appointment. However, if the chip is large, has sharp edges, or if you can see a red or dark spot inside the tooth, it can warrant a same-day assessment to help protect the nerves and prevent an infection from starting. If you are ever unsure, feel free to call our office at (516) 894-0718.
In most cases, yes. To give your child an accurate “flight plan,” we need to see what’s happening beneath the surface. Our digital X-rays are fast, low-radiation, and essential for checking if a traumatic bump or deep cavity has affected the root of the tooth or the permanent tooth waiting to grow in.
